This video made me think back on everything I learned during my time in an undergraduate class, Occupational Psychology. We talked a lot in that class about the way people become successful in the workplace and how people generally interact with one another. This video brought me back to that class in the sense that no matter what environment you are in, to be successful you have to work together and you can't just tag along or pull others behind you.
I mean think about any group project you have ever been a part of... if one person takes charge and does most of the work you are left feeling confused and like you didn't get the full experience the teacher meant for you to have and on the flip side if you’re pulling everyone behind you then you may miss some vital piece of information and end up with misconceptions. I was reminded by this video once again why having people to fall back on and rely on is so important in school, in work, and in life.
The group I am in right now has also made these points very clear even within the past week. My group was there to help answer questions about the class and when things were meant to be completed, we helped one another narrow down ideas for our innovation proposal, and even discussed things unrelated like the new season of Bridgerton.
Part of being a community is socialization, if you look into my classroom you'll see this is a large part of how I teach as well. My classroom is set up in a way where collaboration is natural and anticipated, students are encouraged to discuss topics related to the content and work collaboratively on assignments and group work. In the "real-world'' there is very rarely a time aside from tests where you can't ask someone for help so why should my students be any different. I encourage anyone who believes differently than I do to open your mind and give your own students or staff just a little more freedom to be collaborative and voice their own opinions, you may be surprised by the magic that comes from it.
