Getting Stuck In A Loop

In this video I noticed a lot of things that I have seen or heard in my own life, such as students painting sight words, playing with toys and talking through observations, etc. I have always know that whatever comes around will eventually come back again in education just as in fashion and technology and everything else in life. Not to say that it will always come back the same, but that there are never new ideas, just new ways to implement them. For example, in regards to cell phones flip phones were all the rage when I was in 6th-7th grade and then everything evolved and moved on to the more modern smart phone, but if you have noticed some companies are recreating the flip phones in a new way. This same idea is true in education... as we can see in the video education was more progressive for the time allowing students to discover through play and encouraging students to discover new information, now education has become more standardized and is beginning again to see this change to a more progressive type of teaching.

Although it is easy to see the connections between the past and what is currently happening in education it's also easy to see why things haven't really changed all that much even with all of the technologies we have today. People don't like change, change is scary and there is no data on new things because no one has done them yet, and even if there is data to support newer styles of learning changing mind of parents and those who benefit from the current system is not an easy thing to do. At the end of the day I think the main reason we haven't seen much true change in education is because people like what they know and do not want to learn something new.

Regarding the "people Who Like This Stuff...Like This Stuff" post I would say it is true for my school. People get stuck in there own ways and schools are no different. I like trying new things and I enjoy using the technology in my classroom to making things easier and more enjoyable for my students, but other teachers in my school use little to no technology at all. For example, there is a wonderful teacher aid in my department who writes everything down and when I say everything, well I mean everything. If I send her a google sheet detailing the schedule for the week she will eventually come back to me and show me a paper with everything that was on the document written down. I have asked her before why she does this as I see it as a waste of time, but she says its better that way, she doesn't like the technology. I think her sentiments could be true for most people because they like things the way they like them and that's that.
